Adding carbon black improves conductivity

We manufacture compounds on two continents, in Finland and in USA. We manufacture both standard and custom-made compounds and offer compounding services for our customers.

At Premix Apple Creek, we will manufacture electrically conductive plastics as compounds and concentrates suitable for a wide range of processing types, with several base polymers (PP, PE-HD, PE-LD, PE-LLD, EVA and PE).

Typically, plastics are insulative, with resistance of over 1011 ohm. Premix’s electrically conductive plastic compounds contain carbon black (or carbon fibre), which substantially lowers their resistance. They are not as conductive as metals, but they are very useful as a replacement in many applications, as they are lighter and cheaper, corrosion resistant, and easy to process into different shapes.

Carbon black is most suitable for compounds with surface resistance of up to 106 Ω, but can also be used on dissipative areas of up to 10Ω in specific applications.

Manufacturing in the United States

The new plant will manufacture electrically conductive and static dissipative plastic compounds by using carbon additives.

Controlling static electricity

It is possible to add electrical conductivity to plastics with several additives, but carbon black has established its position as the most widely used electrically conductive additive.

Carbon black offers a superior price-performance ratio and stable properties over time. Typically, carbon black is most suitable for compounds with surface resistance of up to 106 Ω. Carbon black can also be used on dissipative area of up to 108 Ω in certain applications.

We introduced our first electrically conductive plastic compound in 1983 as one of the first companies in the world. Today, the PRE-ELEC® product family covers wide areas of the conductivity spectrum and a large selection of base polymers.
